Jane Mannion’s School of Dance finishes year of competition on top

The dancers at Jane Mannion’s School of Dance took the top spots at the Rainbow Connection Nationals in the Wisconsin Dells this summer.

The team traveled up to Wisconsin in early July to compete against studios from all over the country in a “star-studded national talent competition”, according to the Rainbow Connection website www.rainbowdance.com. The ladies performed routines that range from solos to productions in styles from lyrical to hip hop.

“I Run For Life,” a truly touching studio performance inspiring hope to all of those affected by breast cancer, earned a standing ovation and a first-place honor for the 12-14 Line category, as well as the first place champion in the Overall Senior Gold Group Challenge.

The young ladies have been traveling to local Relays for Life and performing this inspirational piece for all of those who are fighting the devastating effects of cancer. Undoubtedly, this routine has gone beyond competition and continues to teach these young ladies the value of life. The dancers are pictured above with their first-place trophy.

JMSD sent several routines to the Gold Group Challenge at the national level. The Gold Group Challenge is a showcase of all of the top groups at the event who face off again in front of a new set of judges on the final day of competition. The 9-11 Line “JMSD Diner” won first place overall and repeated that victory at the Gold Group Challenge.

The 8-and-Under Small Group “Yellow” took eighth overall with their contemporary routine and went to the GGC with a third-place victory. The 9-11 Large Group took sixth place with their hip hop routine to “Work,” winning third place in the Gold Group Challenge.

JMSD captured almost half of the top 10 spots in the junior small group category. The open variety arts group, “Precious Things,” received sixth place and the “Junior Technical Excellence Award” for the week.

Fifth place went to the contemporary group of “In My Arms,” third place going to a small group tap to “Drift Away,” and a hip hop to “Party Crashing” captured second place in both the overalls and the Gold Group Challenge.

The teen large group of “Don’t Cry” went to the GGC repeating their second-place victory in the overalls. The JMSD teens continued their success with a fifth-place trophy for the contemporary “Que Cera,” fourth place and a special judges’ award of “Fabulous Feet” for the tap routine of “Soulful Rhythms, third place for the contemporary group “Use Somebody,” and finally a second place in the overalls and third place in the GGC for the open variety arts group “Starting Now.”

Kicking off the senior solo category, age 15-18, Kelly Fulton won several distinguished awards, including an all-expenses paid trip to the prestigious Showcase National Dance Championships in Australia in January 2011 as Rainbow’s Senior Dancer of the Year. Fulton performed a high energy jazz routine to “One Night Only,” earning the “She’s Got IT” special judges’ award.

In the title category, Fulton won the “Miss Senior Super Talent” honor with her modern solo, “Breaking Faster.” Also in the senior age category, Tayler Macios took second place with her contemporary solo “Even Now, “ as well as third place in the Dancer of the Year competition.

In the teen solo category, age 12-14, Carrie Eilerman won fifth place with her jazz routine to “Get the Party Started,” earning the “Fierce” special judges’ award. Eilerman also made the top 15 in the Senior Dancer of the Year competition with her contemporary routine “Lost.”

In the junior solo category, ages 9-11, the dancers followed in the success of their teens and seniors. Abigail Rogier scored in the top 10, “The Real Me” taking the 10th spot in the Junior Dancer of the Year competition. Hope Imming won fifth place both in the overalls and in the Junior DOY competition with her contemporary solo to “Boston.”

Mackenzie Frey’s contemporary routine to “Say it Ain’t So” earned fourth place in the overalls as well. Liv Wysocki won the title of “Miss Junior Super Talent” and the special judges’ award of “So So Strong” with her modern solo, “Amazing Grace,” coming in second in the overalls and third in the Junior DOY competition.

JMSD duets and trios triumphed at the national level. The trio of Tayler Macios, McKenzie Rosen and Madison Wellen won the first-place trophy with “The Look” in the teen category. Filling up the top 10 were “Bucking Gun Dun” in second place with Kelly Fulton and Abigail Rogier, “Slow Me Down” in third place with Lauren Lutostanksi, and “Locomotion” in eighth place with Celeste Bremley and Tayler Macios.

Senior duet, “Kidding” with Tayler Macios and Kelly Fulton received eighth place and “Hanging by a Thread” with Carrie Eilerman and Kelly Fulton were just shy of the title with a second-place trophy. In the junior division, Mackenzie Frey, Hope Imming and Liv Wysocki took fifth place with their trio to “Satellite.”

The 2010-11 competition season looks to be just as bright for the dancers at Jane Mannion’s. Registration is being held, classes are forming and choreographers are coming soon. The studio offers classes for various ages at any ability level.
